Exclusive: Brett Kelly Talks Jurassic Shark
For fans of creature features and shark movies in general will want to keep an eye out on Jurassic Shark as it sounds to be a fun little ride. As a fan of creature features I jumped at the chance to be able to ask the director Brett Kelly a couple of questions about his flick in which he was happy to answer.
Horror-Movies: Where did the idea of Jurassic Shark come from? In recent times there has been a slew of shark movies. What makes this one different? Brett Kelly: “I was talking to an investor who wanted to invest in a creature feature. My first pitch was a killer eel movie, but i couldn’t come up with a good title. The title Jurassic Shark came to me in the shower, the rest is history. What makes this shark movie different is my offbeat sense of humour I suppose. This movie is exactly what it sounds like from the title. Truth in advertising.” HM:I believe filming has finished? Will the film be hitting up any film festivals in the coming year? BK: “Filming is most definitely done, I am editing now. as for film festivals, I’m not sure, I signed the rights over to a company so I haven’t been pursuing film festivals. I suppose if any wanted to show it, they could hit me or TomCat Films (the company who signed it) up and we can make it happen. I am in production now on a zombie comedy called My Fair Zombie that we will definitely be going the festival route with. (www.myfairzombiemovie.com)”
HM: I’ve also heard people refer to SyFy, could you see Jurassic Shark heading over there?
BK: “I think that it should definitely be shown on SyFy. They had nothing to do with the production of the movie (as some sites
have erroneously reported) , but I’m sure if they wanted to show the flick, it would be a good fit.”
HM: We haven’t seen the shark, which is a good thing as I hate the creature to be spoiled, but is it a practical creature or CGI? Perhaps a combination?
BK: “It is a combination of the two. Believe it or not, no matter how often the fans cry for practical effects, oftentimes, the companies who release movies won’t even look at your film unless the creature is CGI- crazy right?”
HM: Have you been in touch with any distributors or perhaps you have some in mind?
BK: “The film was made by my own production company and has already been acquired by the sales company TomCat Films to handle the distro, so it is out of my hands. I hope some good companies sign it from them so the world can check it out.”
HM: Anything you would like to add?
BK: “Thanks to folks like yourself who support indie films. This movie is supposed to be a fun movie that makes you smile, that’s it. I’m not trying to save the world. If you want to be entertained, that’s what i’m here for. Feel free to say hi at www.brettkelly.net“
Synopsis: “The story follows two groups of people — one, a group of students, the other, a group of criminals — who are shipwrecked on an island by a giant shark. The island was once used for illegal drilling, and the oil company inadvertantly released the giant shark from its slumber.”
