10 Best Horror Movies Nobody Ever Mentions!
Hello everyone *reaches up and tips his hat*, the name is Mike Mitchell but you can call me DarkwingMantis. Some of you may know me, some may not. I’ve been an on again – off again presence in the online horror community for many years now and am excited to jump back in the saddle again.
When I saw that Horror-Movies.ca was looking for a new blogger, I jumped at the opportunity to try to be part of such a great web-site. I’ve been reading the news and reviews for several years now and have grown to respect the content that this site has to offer. I hope that I will bring something fun, fresh and exciting to the table.
I enjoy things that are off the beaten path, seeking out movies that people don’t see or talk about. Sure, we all love the Freddys and Jasons, but I believe that being a horror fan is also seeking out the obscure, the cultish and the bizarre. With that said, here is my first post (did I mention that I love Top 10 lists?).
This is my list of the Top 10 Horror Movies That Don’t Appear On Top 10 Lists (In No Particular Order)
The Item
This Micro-Budget film revolves around four felons who have been contracted via the internet to pick up a mysterious package and keep it safe for 24 hours. When curiosity strikes, they open the package and release a sentient worm-like creature that begins to turn the felons against one another.
Directed by Dan Clark, who went on to work on Yo Gabba-Gabba, The Item takes low budget excess to the extreme and features one of the most awkward Worm-On-Asian sex scenes ever put on film.
One Hour Photo
It always throws audiences for a loop when an actor that has established themselves in a genre decides to try their hand at something so different, so antithetical to their usual fare, that it turns the film into a curiosity. One Hour Photo is probably one of the best examples in modern cinema.
Robin Williams plays Seymour Parish, a lonely photo lab technician at a Wal-Greens like super store who becomes obsessed with Yorkin family after developing their photos for years.
Robin Williams in a wonderfully subtle and subdued role is a pleasure to watch and pulls you in as you take in his quiet madness. It is such a change from his usual manic antics that he disappears into the role and you almost forget who you are watching.
Shocker
One of Wes Craven’s lesser known films, shocker is probably his zestiest offering to date (NOES aside) with a gleefully psychotic performance by Mitch Pillegi as a murderous television repair man who gains the ability to jump from body to body using electricity.
The Ghostmaker
I stumbled on this little gem in a value bin at Wal-Mart. Featuring a casket made of clockwork that somehow gave the person laying inside an out of body experience, The Ghost maker examines the question we have all asked ourselves , “what would I do if I was a ghost”
Night of the Demons
Party Hardy All Night Long! Just don’t do in Hull House. Angela’s first Halloween bash serves up so much freaky ass imagery (nipple lipstick anyone?) that. A total love note to the ‘80s culture of indulgence is sure to spice up any of your festivities.
Pulse
How can we talk about death and not talk about the afterlife. What happens when our soul leaves this mortal coil, especially in the age of the internet? As Pulse shows us, we tend to go to that weird, frightening place of the internet where no man dare tread.
Cube
Claustrophobia is one of the more common phobias that people suffer from, and the feeling of being in a single room that may or may not want to kill you tends to up the ante. Cube is a wonderfully blood soaked Canadian B-Movie that preys on some of our deepest fears about isolationism, trust and the unknown.
Jack Frost
Put down your stove pipe hat because Jack Frost does not need magic to come to life one day, just a little bio-chemical engineering. In this wonderfully sadistic horror satire, Jack Frost, a serial killer come in contact with some kind of genetic fluid, transforming him into a mutant killer snowman. The effects are terrible, the acting bad, but it melds into a kind of wistfully silly movie that anyone can sit back and enjoy with some friends and a few beers. Oh, and don’t forget the this is the movie that introduces us to Shannon Elizabeth and her… assets…
The Despiser
A deeply low budget film about an alien creature that crash landed on our planet and dies that ends up in the same place that all misplaced souls go to… Limbo. However, several revolutionists from earth’s history come together to help one man return his soul to his body and stop the alien from detonating hundreds of atomic bombs to finally end his eternal torture and destroying our planet in the process
House on Haunted Hill
The recent spat of haunting movies owes its respect to this remake. Geoffrey Rush hams it up as a Vincent Price wannabe roller coaster designer and horror show man who plans a birthday party for his cheating wife, played by the always sizzling Famke Janssen. He invites several people to stay the night in a “Haunted” asylum, and those who remain at dawn will win a million dollar paycheck, but the asylum has other ideas for party.
Let me know what you think in the comments or tell us about some other movies that don’t always get the lime light. Lets let our little light shine on some gems, shall we?
