31 Days of Guilty Pleasures – ‘My Bloody Valentine 3D’

A few years ago I did a daily countdown to Halloween that featured some of my favorite scares from 31 different horror movies.  This year I’m bringing back the feature, but this time we’re taking a look at some of my favorite guilty pleasures.

There’s no rhyme or reason to how these movies are being listed, so the placement on the countdown doesn’t denote any sort of ranking.  Also, my definition of guilty pleasure is a movie that ranges from either being not very good to outright bad, but there’s something about it that still makes it endearing to watch.

Despite getting halfway decent reviews during its initial release “My Bloody Valentine 3D” never seemed to gain traction with horror fans probably because . . . brace yourself . . . it was a remake.  The film also had the notable distinction of opening in third place at the box office and being completely dominated by “Paul Blart: Mall Cop.”

One of the great things about “My Bloody Valentine 3D” is that it came in during the period of 3D madness that movie studios were under.  This was nearly a near before “Avatar” rolled in on the scene and showed everyone how beautiful 3D could be.  Instead this was the era of parlor tricks 3D.  The kind of 3D where you could see the director poking a stick at you and going “Whooooa! Watch out, it’s coming right at you!”  You can kind of get a sense of that in this scene.

But if you didn’t get the chance to enjoy the 3D in theaters, you could still experience it in the comfort of your own home.  When it was released on DVD “My Bloody Valentine” came with possibly some of the worst 3D glasses I’ve ever had the pleasure of experiencing.

Thankfully I still have my DVD case that came with four glasses to ensure no family member would be left out of this bad decision. The coloring on the glasses is purple and green which is a color combination that is guaranteed to give you a headache after twenty minutes.  I do appreciate that they labeled the glasses though, that way if you forget what you’re watching you can turn to your friend and instantly remember.

“My Bloody Valentine 3D” is everything you want out of a slasher movie.  It’s got gore, sex, and scares.  In every way it felt like a throwback to a bygone era of films.  I just don’t recommend forcing yourself to endure the 3D.  Plus, if you’re a fan of Jensen Ackles and “Supernatural” then I definitely recommend checking it out. He gives a solid performance and makes for an excellent troubled hero.  Kind of.
