A New ‘Halloween’ is Still a Long Ways Off According to Jason Blum
If you were hoping for a nice little treat this October to get your excited about the future of the “Halloween” franchise you’re in for a surprise. Instead of putting a giant sized candy bar into your trick-or-treat bag, Jason Blum has lobbed a couple of pennies in there instead.
“Ouija: Origin of Evil” is hitting theaters this October so producer Jason Blum is hitting the promotional circuit to spread the word about the film. The folks at CinemaBlend got to talk with Mr. Blum and they inevitably brought up the subject of “Halloween” which Blumhouse announced it was going to produce earlier this year with John Carpenter as an executive producer.
Around that time there was a swell of rumors and names being thrown around about who might be directing the new film. Well, after these last few months, it would appear that we still don’t know who will be directing it. Here’s what Jason Blum had to say:
We haven’t landed on an approach. We haven’t landed on a filmmaker, and we haven’t landed on an approach. We thought we had a filmmaker and an approach, and we don’t. We’re talking to a handful of people about it — all of them have different ideas. I don’t believe in coming up with an idea and telling a filmmaker what to do. So we have three to five different people we’re talking with, and all of them have a different idea about what it should be. And we haven’t landed on a group, and as a result we haven’t landed on an idea.
It’s interesting that when the original announcement came out it seemed like an official announcement was just around the corner. We had the early rumors that “Hush” director Mike Flanagan was being courted to direct the film and then there were all those mysterious Tweets from Adam Wingard where he was posting images of Halloween. Perhaps both names are still in contention?
At this point Wingard seems to have a full plate with “Deathnote” being in production, but maybe they were waiting for him to finish that up before making any announcements. The same could be said about Mike Flanagan. He’s currently got “Ouija: Origin of Evil” coming out, so maybe they’re waiting for that film to be fully out of the way so Mike can focus on Halloween.
At this point, it is anyone’s guess. We’ll just have to wait and see. Stay tuned.
