ABC Family is Working on a Summer Camp Horror Series
ABC Family isn’t known for horror, in fact, their Halloween specials usually include repeat airings of “Hocus Pocus” and “Harry Potter.” Don’t get me wrong, I like “Hocus Pocus”, but clearly their attempts at horror have been the mildest form of mild. But that might soon change.
ABC Family has announced that they’re creating a new teen horror series called “Dead of Summer.” The show comes by way of “Once Upon a Time” creators Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis and show writer Ian Goldberg. Here’s how Deadline describes the show:
In the vein of current teen horror TV offerings Scream and Scream Queens, Dead of Summer is described as part coming-of-age story, part supernatural horror story. It is set in the late 1980s when school is out for the summer, and a sun-drenched season of firsts beckons the counselors at Camp Clearwater, a seemingly idyllic Midwestern summer camp, including first loves, first kisses – and first kills. Clearwater’s dark, ancient mythology awakens, and what was supposed to be a summer of fun soon turns into one of unforgettable scares and evil at every turn.
It’s clear they’re going for a “Friday the 13th”/”Sleepaway Camp” vibe with this series, but I’m wondering how far they’ll go with it. Obviously there won’t be any nudity, but just how violent are they willing to get with their deaths? We’ve seen network shows get away with some pretty horrific stuff, but is ABC Family willing to push those kind of buttons? I have to imagine they’re still going to keep things relatively tame, but it would be interesting to see a family friendly channel tainted by this one horrific show.
What do you think? Does “Dead of Summer” sound interesting to you?
