Adam Green Reveals His Concept for ‘Hatchet 4’
Before you “Hatchet” fans get excited, this isn’t a confirmation that a new “Hatchet” film is in the works. In fact, it’s very likely that this concept will never see the light of day. However, it is interesting to see what almost could have been.
Arrow in the Head posted the story earlier today where they pointed out that on the “Movie Crypt”, a podcast run by Adam Green and Joe Lynch, they had director/writer/producer Patrick Lussier on. During the podcast they started talking about Wes Craven, because Lussier worked with him on several occasions, and the topic of “Wes Craven’s New Nightmare” came up. “New Nightmare”, as you might know, is a very meta entry into the “Nightmare on Elm Street” series where it’s revealed that Freddy Krueger is a real figure and he’s attacking the real people involved in making the original film.
This whole discussion led to Adam Green recalling that he was going to do something similar with the “Hatchet” series, but opted not too because the similarities to “New Nightmare” would’ve been too great and he didn’t want to draw comparisons between the two films. Here’s what “Hatchet 4” was almost about as transcribed by Cody Hamman at AITH:
It plays with the idea of Victor Crowley actually being a real thing, I lied and said I made it up but I really stole the story and now he’s coming to get everybody who worked on the movie. But he doesn’t really look like he did in the three — he’s really scary, it’s a little more paranormal. I just figured to go out with a bang and make it real and make it grounded and make him terrifying and not campy would have been really cool…
It’s easy to see how Adam would’ve been worried about people comparing it to “New Nightmare”, it’s a very similar concept. Still, it would’ve been intriguing to see a less campy “Hatchet” film that aimed for a different type of horror. After three films the series was really starting to feel like it was spinning it’s wheels, so a concept like this would’ve given it the proper shake up that it needed.
