‘Alien’ and ‘Predator’ are Now Owned by Disney- It’s a Small World After All
It was just ten ideas ago where we talked about Disney’s machinations to consume Fox and in that timespan those plans came to fruition. Disney is now the proud owner of 20th Century Fox.
Disney announced today that all parties involved have finally reached an agreement that would allow the House of Mouse to purchase movie and television divisions of Fox for a whopping $66.1 Billion. This means they’ll own 20th Century Fox, FX, the Fox network, the National Geographic channel and all the properties those divisions own.
So yes, that means the “Alien” and “Predator” franchises are now under the watchful eye of Disney. What does this mean for your future space monster films? Probably not much. The new “Predator” film is still coming out and, if it does well, we’ll probably get another one. Ridley Scott will continue to do . . . whatever it is he’s currently doing to the “Alien” films. Actually, on that note, if the next Prometheus/Alien film is a dumpster film Disney might finally step in and give someone else a crack at that franchise, so that’s good to know at least.
Honestly, if there’s one thing I like about Disney is that they’re interested in making money with quality products. They may not always be the most groundbreaking or best films, but they’re usually very solid. So if they see a potential in films like “Alien” and “Predator” then they’re going to invest in them as needed.
Now, if you’ll let me, I’d like to rant a little.
My inner comic book nerd is obviously excited about the proposition that we may finally get to see the X-Men, Fantastic Four, Dr. Doom, and Galactus share the same screen as the rest of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, the part of me that isn’t salivating over geek culture would like to remind you that a company like Disney owning so much is actually not healthy for the entertainment industry. Competition is good and it breeds creative decisions and pushes innovations. Not to mention that it’s a bit unsettling to think that one large corporation controls a bulk of the media our young people consume. I know I sound like I’m wearing a tinfoil hat here, but this feels like the start of a crazy dystopian future where we’re all expected to tune in to the mandatory Disney hour in order to receive rations.
That being said, really excited to see Star Wars this weekend.
Alright, rant over.
