AMC is Developing a Walking Dead Companion Series
Ever find yourself thinking “Boy, I sure do like Walking Dead, but I wish I could watch this show with different characters”? Then AMC has the solution for you.
AMC has announced that they are working on a “companion series” for their massively popular “Walking Dead” show that’ll debut sometime in 2015. Robert Kirkman and Gale Ann Hurd will continue to act as Executive Producers on this new series.
AMC’s president and general manager, Charlie Collier, spoke briefly about the companion series and only mentioned that it’ll be “an entirely new story and cast of characters.” Meaning it won’t be based on Robert Kirkman’s current comic book series, but will be set in the same world. ”It’s a big world and we can’t wait to give fans another unforgettable view of the zombie apocalypse” Collier said.
Robert Kirkman also chimed in with his own thoughts on this spin-off series.
After 10 years of writing the comic book series and being so close to the debut of our fourth, and in my opinion, best season of the TV series, I couldn’t be more thrilled about getting the chance to create a new corner of The Walking Dead universe. The opportunity to make a show that isn’t tethered by the events of the comic book, and is truly a blank page, has set my creativity racing.
With “Mad Men” and “Breaking Bad” coming to an end soon and the recent cancellation of “The Killing”, it’s no surprise that AMC is looking everywhere for some new shows. In fact, “Breaking Bad” will also have a spin-off series based on Saul Goodman’s character. I’m all for more horror on any network, but a move like this screams of desperation and makes me worry about the final product. However, I’m not going to judge the show until I’ve seen it. Who knows, a zombie series not tied to any source material might prove to be better than the “Walking Dead” we have right now.
What would you like to see in a Walking Dead spin-off series? I think it might be interesting to see a show set during the initial outbreak. It would give us a better look at a period of time we’ve only gotten glimpses of. Speculate below and let us know what you think!
The Walking Dead returns to AMC on October 13th.
