Constantine Gets Series Order from NBC
Its official. John Constantine, the DC Comics paranormal P.I./deviant, is coming to your local television set in the near future. NBC has picked up the pilot and is sending it to series.
We first heard rumblings of a new television show based around the DC Comics property back in January. A month later we learned that actor Matt Ryan would be putting on the trench coat to play John Constantine. Shortly after, filming began on the pilot using a script written by Daniel Cerone (“The Mentalist”) and David S. Goyer (recent Batman films). After mulling over the pilot episode, which Deadline reports was not universally liked, NBC has decided to send it to series.
Constantine is described as a working-class Londoner with rakish good looks, scruffy blond hair, deadpan humor, and signature trench coat, who has been studying the dark arts since he was a teenager. When the daughter of a late friend is targeted by demons, Constantine steps in to save her.
There’s no word on when the series will air, but I have to imagine that given the nature of the show they will try and aim for a Fall premiere. I’m slightly concerned that the pilot wasn’t “universally” liked, but that doesn’t necessarily have a negative connotation. For all we know, the pilot could’ve been too dark/extreme for some tastes. If we get an accurate depiction of John Constantine, I expect some people will be a little put off by the show’s nature. Here’s hoping that’s the case.
