Del Toro Reveals Pacific Rim Sequel Details (SPOILERS!)
Needless to say, this is an incredibly spoiler filled article. I repeat: THERE ARE SPOILERS AHEAD! We’re talking big spoilers, the kind that would ruin major plot details about “Pacific Rim.” So if you don’t want the movie ruined for you, don’t keep reading. Please, don’t read if you haven’t seen the movie yet.
I’m going to place the synopsis here, then I’ll tell you the sequel details.
When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes—a washed up former pilot (Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Kikuchi)—who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.
Alright. You ready for this? No turning back. Last night at the “Pacific Rim” screening in Long Beach, California Guillermo del Toro made a special appearance to do a little Q&A with audience members about the movie. During the discussion, Guillermo dropped a few details about what direction the sequel might go in.
First he talked about how certain characters were able to “drift” with the Kaiju. In the film, drifting is when a person is able to connect their mind to another person so that they can pilot the Jaegers in perfect synchronicity. One of the characters takes this technology and uses it to drift with a Kaiju monster so that they can better understand why the Kaiju are attacking. Guillermo revealed that in the sequel, this ability would become a central focus of the film. Perhaps allowing a human to control a Kaiju? Guillermo was very vague about the implications of drifting with a Kaiju, but stressed how complex the creatures were and how we’ve only just begun to understand their nature.
Secondly, he revealed that we might not have seen the last of Gypsy Danger. By the end of the film, the iconic robot is seemingly destroyed and lost forever on the other side of the bridge between the worlds. However, the robot wasn’t completely destroyed and pieces of it remain intact on the other side. What does this mean? Could the creatures from the other world use our own technology against us? Perhaps a sequel will see a complete reversal with humans using Kaijus and the alien creatures utilizing giant mechs.
Or… Perhaps a Mecha Kaiju?! Oh man, that’d be the hypest shit. Either way, it’s clear that Guillermo has long term plans for the series. Provided, of course, the first one does well enough to warrant another film.
