DreamWorks is Developing a Movie Based on the Cropsey Legend
DreamWorks is working up some nightmares with a new film that’ll be based on the infamous New York legend Cropsey.
Variety broke the news today that DreamWorks is acquiring a pitch from Richard Naing and Ian Goldberg for a horror comedy titled “Cropsey.” Here’s how they described the film:
“Cropsey” will center on a group of adolescents at a summer camp haunted by an urban legend that dates back to the Colonial period. DreamWorks is developing the story as an Amblin-esque project mixing horror and humor — a la “Gremlins” and “The Goonies.”
As the article points out this has no relation to an old documentary about “Cropsey”, but if you’re interested in the subject matter, that’s a pretty great documentary to watch. It explores the truth behind the legend and tries to figure out where something like the “Cropsey” story may have come from by exploring real life murder cases. It’s not exactly scary, but there are a couple of genuinely creepy moments in the documentary. If you’re curious I’ve included a trailer at the bottom for the documentary.
It should also be noted that elements of this film sound a lot like the 80’s classic “The Burning” which featured a killer named “Cropsy” and had a similar plot line.
Hopefully this camp-killer film will manage to find life and won’t wind up like Paramount’s other slasher flick “Friday the 13th.”
