Filming Has Commenced for [REC 4] Apocalypse
Filming began for Spanish POV zombie film [REC 4] Apocalypse this past Saturday. The [REC] (short for Recording) series, follows the different perspectives of people encountering a persistent and deadly new strain of rabies, which essentially turns people into fast-running, foaming at the mouth, want-to-chomp-on-you, zombies.
According to a Spanish press release who quoted director Juame Balagueró, “Angela Vidal the young television reporter who entered the building with the fireman, manages to make it out alive. But what the soldiers don’t know is that she carries the seed of the strange infection.”
Actress Manuela Velasco returns as the peppy reporter who if you remember at the end of [REC 2] (which was in fact an extended ending of [REC]), we see Angela Vidal (Velasco) crawl back to the camera after being dragged away by the the Medeiros girl, who subsequently jumps on top of Angela and inserts a weird, slug-like organism into her mouth thus passing the host onto her.
The first [REC] was tons of fun and I wish I had seen it before the American remake Quarantine, which to be fair was actually quite good. I remember sitting in my best friend’s home theater with the lights off during [REC], and constantly looking back at the door to make sure the sounds we heard from the movie weren’t actually coming from inside the house.
[REC 2] wasn’t awful, but not nearly as entertaining as it’s predecessor. The film gave us more backstory about the virus and added a religious aspect to it which I’m not sure if that really added anything useful to the story itself. [REC 2] still had the flair and scares, but broke the scientific parameters they established in the first film.
[REC 3]: Genesis was…just simply not that great. We follow the attendees of a wedding reception that quickly goes south when the infected begin eating the party guests. This installment didn’t add anything to the general story arch besides hinting that the virus is of Biblical proportions and was prophesied in the book of Ruth. The film itself was hokey at times, what with the groom dressing in a suit of armor and wielding a sword to save the damsel in distress the bride.
While [REC] and [REC 2] were genuinely scary at times, I found [REC 3]: Genesis to be completely un-scary. There are several factors to consider in why this happened, but I blame writer/director Paco Plaza and the absence of the original creator Juame Balagueró.
[Rec 4] Apocalypse is set for an October 10th, 2014 release in Spain and Balaguaró is to return to direct. Unfortunately no word on a North American release date as of yet, but we’ll keep you posted.

An old oil tanker, miles off shore and surrounded by water on all sides, has been especially equipped for the quarantine.
