First Promo for Showtime’s ‘Penny Dreadful’

There be monsters.

In Showtime’s first promo for their new psychological horror thriller series, Penny Dreadful, we’re promised classic monsters in this dark origin story set in Victorian London.  Literatures most infamous characters like Dr. Frankenstein, Dorian Grey, and Dracula make this new adult drama coming sometime in 2014.

The new series is the brainchild of writer, director, and executive producer John Logan, who just so happens to be a three-time Oscar nominee for a few unknowns like Gladiator starring Russell Crowe, The Aviator starring Leonardo DiCaprio, and Hugo starring Asa Butterfield (also starring in the up-coming sci-fi adaptation of Orson Scott Card‘s Ender’s Game) and Chlöe Grace Moretz (also starring in the up-coming supernatural adaptation of Stephen King‘s Carrie).

Nothing too exciting here…and for those of you who have trouble understanding sarcasm, well too bad for you.

What’s really intriguing about the new premium cable series is director Sam Mendes (Skyfall, American Beauty) will be producing alongside Pippa Harris (Revolutionary Road) of Neal Street productions.  With these three at the helm and director Juan Antonio Bayona (The Orphanage, The Impossible) directing the first few episodes, it looks like we’re in for one hell of ride.

The promo itself is pretty awesome looking and with it being aired on Showtime I’m sure we can expect plenty of gore and gratuitous nudity, which is completely fine by me.  I also think that’s the Wolfman at the end of the teaser if I’m not mistaken…
