Gareth Edwards Will Direct Godzilla 2 and 3
It’s not everyday that I can work a bit of “Star Wars” discussion into a horror movie website, but today is my day to finally indulge myself. Gareth Edwards, the man who just directed the most recent Godzilla movie, is about to take a trip to a galaxy far, far, way.
THR has learned that director Gareth Edwards has been attached to direct a “Star Wars” spin-off movie due out in 2016. Normally, we wouldn’t be talking about this bit of news, except it was revealed earlier this week that Godzilla would get a sequel and it sounded like Gareth Edwards was still attached to direct. So will the director be sticking around for the next Godzilla?
According to Legendary Entertainment CEO Thomas Tull, Edwards will be attached to Godzilla for the foreseeable future:
The plan has always been for Gareth to direct a different film before we started on another Godzilla, but who knew it would a Star Wars installment? We have a great plan in store for Godzilla fans and I am looking forward to seeing Gareth’s imprint on the Star Wars universe.
Not only will Edwards be returning for “Godzilla 2″, but he’s also signed for a third installment. So if you’re a fan of Edwards’ take on Godzilla this news is a bit of a double edged sword. On one hand, the director will be back, but on the other hand, it sounds like there will be a long break between films.
If the “Star Wars” spin-off won’t be out till 2016, then that means we might not see another Godzilla film till 2017 or later. At least that’s plenty of time for them to polish off a good script. I’m just bummed that we’re entering a Kaiju draught after two consecutive years of awesome monster action. Maybe someone will try and remake Gamera in the interim.
