Guillermo del Toro Wins Best Director at the Golden Globes for ‘The Shape of Water’

It was a big year for horror movies and monsters at the Golden Globes.  This year we saw a total of eleven nominations between the likes of “Get Out”, “The Shape of Water”, and “Stranger Things” for numerous categories including best actor, best series, best actress, best drama, and uh . . . best comedy.  Unfortunately, you can’t win them all and at the end of the day the genre only walked away with two wins, but one of them was a long time coming.

In the end it was “The Shape of Water” that walked away with the wins.  It took two awards including Best Original Score from Alexandre Desplat and Best Director for Guillermo del Toro.  With “The Shape of Water” being del Toro’s ultimate tribute to the classic movie monster, it was amazing to see him get recognized for the history and passion that went into making this film.  It was well deserved and would’ve only been better if the film had won for Best Drama as well.

The real significance here, though, is that the Golden Globes are often seen as a good predictor for what the Oscars are going to be like.  It seems like a good chance that Guillermo del Toro and “The Shape of Water” will continue to enjoy their award season success at the big show and, at the very least, we should now see del Toro nominated for Best Director if not also see “The Shape of Water” considered for Best Picture.

Meanwhile, while “Get Out” didn’t nab any awards it was stuff nominated in its fair share of categories and it’ll be very interesting to see if the film manages to get a best picture nomination at the Oscars despite failing to win the Best Comedy category it was nominated in at the Golden Globes.

But all that aside, I just wanted to congratulate Guillermo del Toro on his win and say that I look forward to his future successes.
