Hansel & Gretel Get Baked (2013) Movie Review

First off, you can ignore the “From the Producer of Twilight.” There’s no real teenage angst or anything sparkly about this movie! Which of course is a good thing.

Hansel and Gretel is a story we should all be familiar with. Plus there’s been three other films (Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters, Hansel & Gretel and Hansel & Gretel: Warriors of Witchcraft), all different versions of the same story, that came out around the same time as each other.

Hansel & Gretel Get Baked (formally known as Black Forest: Hansel And Gretel & The 420 Witch) is on a completely different wave length though. From the get go, Gretel (Molly C. Quinn) and friend Ashton (Andrew James Allen) are puffing away on old the herbs, getting high as a kite! Shortly after running out of weed, Ashton pops out to resupply from the local dealer, who happens to be an old lady called Agnes (Lara Flynn Boyle)!

Obviously the old lady is a really a Witch, obviously. So instead of the traditional sweets and cakes etc, she lures her victims in with the promise of a splif or bong and something to satisfy the munchies.

Meanwhile, back at Gretel’s house, she expresses her concern to brother Hansel (Michael Welch) about the fact that Ashton has been out for far too long. Now a day later and he’s still missing, Gretel tries asking the police for help, which is a waste of time, so she goes on the search for her missing friend.

Along with the help of Hansel and reluctant friend Bianca (Bianca Saad), they manage to get mixed up with more drug dealers and not just the witch. In turn, they all end up in a battle for survival in the witch’s basement!

The title says it all really. A simple story with an imaginative twist. This isn’t scary of course, but it does provide a bit of gore in between the laughs. The particle effects are decent, so too is the acting. The director does enough with the talent he’s got in front of the camera to provide the entertainment required to keep you watching.

All you need to bring to the party is a fun attitude and a box of popcorn and a beer or three.
