‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’ Reboot Gets Writer
“I Know What You Did Last Summer” was the ugly step sister that had to follow in the shadow of “Scream.” As a 90’s slasher, I thought it was okay. These days I have a certain nostalgic remembrance of it that probably taints my view on it, but I don’t think it’s as bad as people make it out to be. So when the studios announce they’re going to reboot it, I say: “Sure, why not?”
Deadline has learned that Sony Pictures is going to reboot “I Know What You Did Last Summer” with “Oculus” director/co-writer Mike Flanagan and his writing partner Jeff Howard. According to Deadline’s report, it sounds like Flanagan is only attached as a writer at this point, but I have to imagine Sony wouldn’t mind if he jumped on as director as well.
If you’re too young to remember “I Know What You Did Last Summer”, than I’m envious of your youth. The film was a slasher flick about a group of friends who conspire to cover up a drunken hit-and-run that left one man dead. A year later a mysterious figure, claiming to have knowledge about what they did the previous summer, begins to stalk and kill the teens. The film starred Jennifer Love Hewitt and spawned two sequels: “I Still Know What You Did Last Summer” and “I’ll Always Know What You Did Last Summer.” If this new reboot manages to spawn sequels, I hope they find a way to make the titles even more cumbersome.
