‘Insidious Chapter 4’ is in the Works at Sony
Whether or not you enjoyed the last installment in the “Insidious” series, it seemed like it was only a matter of time before a new sequel was announced. While I thought “Insidious: Chapter 3” was an alright addition to the franchise, the film did very well at the box office. So it makes sense that Sony would be up for another round of creepy ghosts and possessions.
While no big official statement has been released to the world, it seems like Sony is fully intent on making “Insidious: Chapter 4.” According to Moviepilot, Sony revealed during Cinemacon that they were indeed moving forward with another sequel to the “Insidious” series. No concrete details were given at the time, but Moviepilot did point out an interview director/writer Leigh Whannell did with We Got This Covered where he expressed interest in further exploring Lin Shaye’s character in future installments.
I don’t know. I haven’t really thought about it yet. But for the purposes of this interview, I’ll say that I’d like to explore the time between this film and the first film. That whole area there where Elise has rediscovered her gift, I think you could have a lot of adventures before she arrives. So I think there is a lot of room there. We’ve kind of established Lin [Shaye] in this particular film as kind of this superhero, so that would be kind of interesting to explore in the other films.
But what about the teaser they left us with after the ending of “Insidious: Chapter 2”? Here’s what Whannell told us last year.
It could be explored in the future. I kind of never the liked the idea of the film being about Lin (Elise) as a ghost. It could’ve gotten a bit silly if it’s just Specs and Tucker going ‘I think she’s here with us.’ And we have her behind us. I like the idea of going back in time, cause I wanted Lin’s character to be alive. And that’s what we did. I think a lot of people go ‘Prequel?! But I want to find out what happened at the end of the second film!’ And I really think that desire to find out about the second film goes away, because when you watch the film it just sucks you into this whole new universe. And that’s been our experience testing the film.
Seeing as how both answers were given about a year ago, it’s very likely things could have changed between now and then. In fact we don’t even know if Leigh Whannell will return to direct or write the new film. All have right now is speculation, but with Sony admitting that a new film is indeed in the works we may soon get some actual announcements. So stay tuned.
