La Llorona Gets a Modern Update in Weep
Ever since Mexican folklore legend of “La Llorona” was featured at Universal Studios Hollywood Horror Nights, I’ve noticed this growing tidal wave of momentum building around the character. First it was a theme park attraction, then she started showing up in TV shows, and now she might soon have a movie.
Deadline broke the news today that BoulderLight Pictures is working on a modern update of the La Llorona legend. The project will be called “Weep” and it’ll be written by T.J. Cimfel and David White.
BoulderLight Pictures’ previous work includes “Contracted”, which hit theaters last year. The production company is looking to attract a bigger audience with “Weep” by supplying the film with a larger budget and a “higher profile cast.”
There’s no word on the official plot of the film, but it is a modern take on the La Llorona legend. For those that don’t know what that is, La Llorona is a Mexican folktale about a woman condemned to wander the Earth after murdering her own children. They say she stalks the night, crying hysterically, to look for new children to replace the ones she lost. And when she finds little boys or girls that are up too late or out at night, she grabs them and drowns them in a lake!
Of course, like most folktales, everyone has a different version of the story, but that’s more or less it. Some say the story is based on true events, but we all know that can’t be. Wait, what’s that sound? Is it crying or just the wind? Oh no! Don’t look behind you . . .
