Lionsgate Wants a ‘Cabin in the Woods 2’- Turns Out Studios Like Money
“Cabin in the Woods” wasn’t a mega success, but it was still a rather impressive horror outing when the biggest horror movies tended to be those with miniscule budgets. Domestically the film pulled in just over $42 million dollars. So it’s no surprise that Lionsgate would be interested in another trip to the woods.
While speaking with Den of Geek, director and writer Drew Goddard opened up about the possibility for a “Cabin in the Woods” sequel. Goddard admitted that the studios were interested in a sequel, even going so far as to say that “they’ve come to us.” However, does that mean a sequel could be in the works? Not any time soon. Here’s what Goddard had to say on the matter.
The funny part is, I don’t think we planned that movie to do a sequel, you know? . . . There’s nothing in the hopper right now, but who knows? The way Joss and I work, we might wake up tomorrow and go, ‘let’s go do that,’ or whatever.
As you might recall the ending to “Cabin in the Woods” is rather definitive, so a sequel following it might be pretty challenging. However, who says it has to be a sequel? Maybe we’ll get a prequel? It’d be interesting to see what the Facility was like in the 70’s and 80’s or even in earlier days of horror like the 30’s.
At this point, anything could happen since Drew Goddard and Joss Whedon haven’t even really thought about what a sequel to “Cabin in the Woods” would be like. We may or may not get one, but it currently lives in the realm of infinity possibilities and that’s pretty exciting.
