‘Mama’ Writer to Script ‘Escape from New York’ Remake
It’s been awhile since we last heard about the “Escape from New York” remake, but don’t worry, it’s still coming. While production may have gone dormant for a while there, a new writer has arisen to take up the challenge of remaking the John Carpenter classic.
THR has learned that “Luther” creator Neil Cross has stepped into the writer’s box for the “Escape from New York” remake. Cross only has one other feature film credit and that’s for 2013’s “Mama.” According to THR Fox is hoping to reboot the series in the same way they were able to reboot the “Planet of the Ape” series. So it sounds like they’re hoping to get a few films out of this reboot.
Currently the only other big name attached to the project is John Carpenter who will have creative input on the project along with an executive producer credit.
Side thought: with Neil Cross acting as writer I just had a crazy thought. What if Idris Elba played Snake Plissken? He’s not quite as gritty as Kurt Russel was, but he can certainly pull of a badass loner. I don’t see it happening, but I certainly wouldn’t be opposed to it.
