Mummy Reboot Loses Another Director
Looks like the Mummy reboot is devolving into a game of musical chairs. The long-in-production reboot of Universal’s classic monster movie franchise has been hit with another setback.
The Wrap has learned that current director, Andy Muschetti, has dropped out of the project due to “creative differences.” According to The Wrap, Universal is pursuing a more family-friendly tentpole film. Much like the last Mummy film with Brendan Fraser. Muschietti, who previously directed “Mama” for Universal, had a different vision for the project that would’ve taken it down a much darker route.
However, while Universal and Muschietti have parted ways on this project, they’re still hoping to work on other features. In the end, it’s a shame that we won’t be seeing his vision for the Mummy as I really enjoyed his work on “Mama.” I think Muschietti could have delivered on an appropriately atmospheric Mummy movie with plenty of chills. I understand Universal’s desire to recreate the blockbuster magic of the 90′s Mummy film, but I think they’d be better served returning the monster to its more macabre roots.
