Neill Blomkamp ‘May Make’ His Alien Film After All
Grab your bucket of salt and consume it generously. While director Neill Blomkamp may be super optimistic about pursuing his “Alien” project, it doesn’t mean that it’ll happen. Still, the fact that he’s so passionate about it and actively putting inquiries out there is definitely a good sign.
While speaking with Collider about his upcoming film “Chappie”, Blomkamp was asked about his recent Twitter musings where he revealed that he had put together concept art for an “Alien” film that he had conceptualized. Here’s what he had to say about the origins of those pictures and where the project stands today.
There was a reason. I wanted to make that film. I still may make that film. [Laughs] It may happen. But I did it on my own time. Like when Chappie was winding down in post and I had available time, I started to work on it. It was also from talking to Sigourney [Weaver] during the making of this. I mean, I asked her about Alien all the time. Alien and Aliens are my favorite films. So I genuinely wanted to make that film, I came up with the story, I came up with way more art than I put out and I never officially spoke to Fox about it, but Fox wanted to make it. So, I kind of touched on it and I didn’t know what to do, and I didn’t know if I was just gonna go leave directing for a whole bunch of time and then I was like, ‘I might as well put some art out.’ But I may make it. I don’t know. That’s where it stands.
I find it interesting that he revealed he admitted to creating more concept art than he showcased. Perhaps Blomkamp decided to put some small morsels out there to test the waters for interest? It was certainly an excellent way of drumming up excitement as the concept art photos got everyone buzzing about what he could do with the “Alien” franchise. So while the future of Blomkamp and “Alien” still seems uncertain, it’s exciting to know that the project isn’t entirely dead. Here’s hoping it bears fruit one day.
