New Walking Dead TV Show Spin Off Details Revealed

The Walking Dead on AMC has done for zombie television what George Romero did for zombie movies and then some. Thanks to the work of Robert Kirkman and producer Gale Anne Hurd the show has become a ratings juggernaut and one of the most watched TV shows on TV.

So it should come as no surprise to anyone that AMC is looking to capitalize on its popularity with a spin off television series.

There has been a lot of speculation about what the Walking Dead spin-off will be about with many thinking it will in fact be a prequel opening things up for a new timeline and new characters. Although we have no confirmation as to whether the new Walking Dead series will be a prequel we do know that the show will feature all new characters and a new location we have not seen before.

Scott M Gimple confirmed in an interview with Collider that the show will not be in Georgia and will bring a whole new spin on the series.

I have little to do with the spinoff… This I do know. It’s set in the world of The Walking Dead but from what I understand, it’s not like Daryl’s cousin or anything… I would never say never [to a crossover between the shows] because if I was a viewer I would say that sounds awesome. But we’re doing our own show.

I also think a crossover might be tough because it would take a lot of [license] within the comic story. We’ll see. When we get to all-out war, who knows? We’ll add another faction. It’ll be the Saviors and the Hilltop and the ‘Spin-offers’.

In an interview last October Robert Kirkman talked with IGN about the spin-off saying quote;

Yeah, it’s a really different location with completely different people, so we are going to see an entirely different corner of the Walking Dead world. It definitely won’t be set in Georgia, I can at least say that. It’s important to us that this show exists on its own. The spinoff has to be a show worthy of existing, or else we’ve all sold out.

So that’s something we’re all working hard towards doing, and I think we can pull it off. I think that the ideal situation is, when you’re watching the spinoff, you’re like, “Wow, this is a really awesome show.” The whole other show doesn’t need to exist for this show to be cool and stand on its own.

AMC has plans for 12 season of The Walking Dead and Scott Gimble promises that over the arc of the twelve season their will be finality. He again tells Collider;

I would say ‘Yes’ [there is an end-game]. I actually don’t like spoiling myself on the comic. I read it as I go. Robert’s offered to tell me the whole thing so I get general aspects of it. I know the emotional end game of the show but there’s practical aspects, I want to keep with the comic. With these characters, you definitely have to think of the emotional endgame and that is very much a part of where I’m headed. But I want to have the flexibility to change the practicals with the comic and I don’t want Robert to spoil the whole series for me.
