‘Resident Evil’ Reboot to be Directed by ‘Strangers: Prey at Night’ Director

I’m sure this will be extremely divisive news.  Over a year ago we learned that the “Resident Evil” series was getting a long deserved reboot. After years of suffering, they’ve finally decided to throw out Alice and all the crazy B.S. she brought to the “Resident Evil” universe and start fresh. Well, today we’ve learned who will be handling the film.

Variety has reported that Johannes Roberts will write and direct the upcoming reboot of “Resident Evil.”  Roberts has been in the horror game for a bit now, but he really burst onto the scene with his shark flick “47 Meters Down.”  Then this year he directed the long awaited sequel “The Strangers: Prey at Night.”  So you can see why I said this might be divise news.  I think the general sentiment around “47 Meters Down” might be more positive, but when it comes to “Strangers” I’ve seen people either proclaim absolute hate for that movie or they deeply love it.  Personally, I enjoyed it.

That being said, I think we can all agree that “Prey at Night” and “47 Meters Down” were at least competently shot and were movies that were easy to watch, which can’t really be said for Paul W. Andersons’ “Resident Evil” movies.  So while I think this is a big step-up from the previous franchise director, I can understand if some people only see it as a minor improvement.

According to Variety the new film will start production in 2019 with a new cast, so stay tuned for more details in the near future.
