[Review] MurderDrome
What with the film making its way to the UK on DVD this May 12th via Monster Pictures, I was able to get my hands on the film and it’s everything I thought it would be, and more. It’s a total cheese-fest and I love it. If you love your slasher flicks filled with hot chicks, copious amounts of blood, witty dialogue and neon lights, yep, it’s all about the neon, this sucker is for you.
MurderDrome follows Roller derby sensation Cherry Skye as she competes in her favorite sport. But soon, love and jealousy gets in the way, but that’s the least of her problems as soon the gates of hell are opened up and all sorts of mayhem is unleashed. The only thing Cherry Skye has left to do is to whip on those skates and do what she does best, throw down and send this spawn of Satan back to hell!
Of course, while still looking smokin’ hot and managing to wear skates throughout the duration of the film, same as the other Derby girls. This also adds to the momentum, it’s fast paced and in your face, full of blood and basically just a fun flick.
It ain’t gonna be for everyone, but then why should it? If you love your eighties slashers. then MurderDrome should just fit right in, somewhere between that perm and Elf figure you have hanging around.
And then, there was the gore. The gore is great, some excellent work has been applied here which really helps elevate the film, as no-one, and I mean no-one likes shoddy F/X work, especially when it comes to the red stuff, and there is plenty to be had. Although, there were some CGI elements, but I’ll let them off as they put in a pretty killer decapitation.
However, as the project was initially planned as a web-series, the film only clocks in at around the 76 minute mark, but its short time keeps the film flowing at a steady rate and it just works. Not only that, but the film actually features real Derby girls, this helps authenticate it for all you Derby folks out there, and for us the viewer, and I have to say a job well done, acting and skating and pulling some crazy stunts, you chicks get a high-five from me!
So, grab that popcorn, dim the lights and get ready for some death on skates, as MurderDrome is making its way home and its a helluva lot of fun.
The UK DVD also features some extra goodies including the trailer, behind-the-scenes featurette, and commentary from the lead and director.
For those of you who do not live in the UK, but would like to see this sucker will be pleased to know that the film will soon be making its way to the U.S. and Canada this August 26th.
