Rob Zombie Announces He’s Done Making Horror Movies
Rob Zombie you either love his horror movies or you hate them. Rarely does there seem to be much middle ground on this topic. This morning one of our readers alerted me to the fact that Rob Zombie seems to have had his fill of doing horror movies. Thats right he is throwing in the towel…. at least for now.
The Pheonix New Times did an interview with Rob Zombie asking if he would be interested in doing a monster movie next and his answer was pretty shocking declaring the Lords of Salem will be his last horror flick;
No. I’m not really thinking of doing anything . . . Lords of Salem is my last sort of horror-genre related film for a really long time.
Rob Zombie has gotten plenty of heat over the years and some scorn from horror fans. He had the balls to step up to remake one of the greatest horror movies of all time, Halloween and then followed that up with a sequel to a remake. I thought his remake was pretty solid but the sequel was so bad it just made me brain hemmorage.
His film House of 1000 Corpses put him on the map. The film is not only one of the best modern horror movies it proved that he can really create something original and terrifying. Rob Zombie also managed to make a sequel The Devils Rejects that was as good as the original which is an extremely rare feat.
As far as Lords of Salem goes it has gotten a pretty good response from the writers on our site. Ryan Maher reviewed it and says;
‘The Lords of Salem’ basks within it’s originality, but it’s short term success will be restricted by it’s budget and inevitably quiet initial distribution. Mark my words though, twenty years from now people. This has cult classic written all over it, and I have no doubt that given the trust of a big league producer, a known cast and backing from a major distributor like Lions Gate, Rob Zombie could very well take us back to our childhoods, to the very first time we watched ‘The Wicker Man’, or ‘The Exorcist’, or ‘Child’s Play’.
Those were the days. If he learns from his mistakes and continues to work hard as he did on ‘The Lords’, Rob Zombie could go on to do great things. If he were to quit tomorrow, at least he could say that he’s had a go, and money was never his goal.
It would seem that Ryan had a crystal ball in his last sentence because it seems Rob Zombie is done with the genre. DirtyGirl says;
…..I think this movie will get very split reviews from horror fans. If you can appreciate an art-house independent horror film you will enjoy it. If you prefer a grindhouse style gory action movie, you will hate it. I am sure this movie will surprise and divide Rob Zombie fans.
Up until now, Zombie has earned a very well-deserved reputation for films that push the limits of good taste. For the most part I have enjoyed most of his films (yes, even Halloween 2!) For me, Lords of Salem showed that he is not a one trick pony when it comes to his writing and I really appreciate that. I highly recommend you go and see it when it comes out and form your own opinion about it.
What are your thoughts on Rob Zombie deciding to hang up his boots when it comes to the horror genre? Worth noting this is not the first time Rob Zombie has quit the genre he made a similar declaration to the Chicago Tribune back in 2009. Perhaps he is just looking for his fans to reaffirm their love for him and encourage him not to leave? I for one hope he keeps making movies.
Is it a loss or a win for horror fans? Did you see Lords Of Salem? How much do you think that film played into his decision? Hit the comments.
