Rob Zombie Explains Why His Halloween is Better?
Rob Zombie is a polarizing filmmaker and fans love him and they hate him. I for one think Rob Zombie has done some spectacular work including The Devils Rejects and yes I also include the Halloween remake.
Halloween 2 for me was horrible but that is a matter of opinion as many horror fans appreciate it. Was Rob Zombies Halloween remake as good as the original? Of course not nobody would ever claim that. Rob Zombies Halloween was a solid horror film that respected the original work by John Carpenter while adding new elements to it.
The film as much as it polarized fans was a huge hit bringing in over $77million world wide according to the numbers. ( For those wondering the original John Carpenter film released in 1978 brought in $70million dollars on a budget of $325,000. )
I think that the main reason that horror fans love to hate on Rob Zombie especially after he started doing remakes is because of his comments trashing filmmakers who do remakes in the first place. In an interview he reportedly said quote ( via SlashFilm )
“I feel it’s the worst thing any filmmaker can do. I actually got a call from my agent and they asked me if I wanted to be involved in a remake of CHAINSAW. I said no fucking way! Those movies are perfect — you’re only going to make yourself look like an asshole by remaking them.
Go remake something that’s a piece of shit and make it good. Like with my movie I have elements of CHAINSAW in it because I love that movie so much, but I wouldn’t dare want to “remake” it. It’s like a band trying to be another band.”
So we can break down Rob Zombies decision to remake Halloween into three categories
- a) He had a change of heart on horror remakes
- b) He thinks Halloween is a horrible movie that needed a remake.
- c) He was given an opportunity to remake one of the best horror films of all time and could simply not pass up the opportunity.
According to MoviePilot Rob Zombie has supposedly managed to list a few reasons why his Halloween remake is better than the original and reference a video on Youtube( which you can watch below ). Paraphrasing here are a few of the reasons Rob Zombie supposedly thought his movie was better;
- The remake was ‘better’ because in the original the character of Dr Loomis in the orginal was all drama and came off as a drunken idiot.
- That the remake was better because in the original Myers Jumpsuit was always clean and not dirty.
- That Myers outfit made it look like he robbed a hardware store for his getup.
- Michael Myers Drove in the original Halloween
You can read the entire article on MoviePilot [ Update The article has been removed from MoviePilot so no reading it now ] or watch the video below which is their source. Rob Zombie has responded to the article and you can read his comments below and its clear he is not happy. Kudos to Matt Williams who was the first to share it with us. Rob Zombie wrote on his Facebook page with a few edits by me for language;
Who ever wrote this (Amy Martin) is a trouble making [expletive]. I love John Carpenter’s Halloween and John knows that. Why? Because I told him. In fact he was the first person I called and told about my film. He said he was cool with it. I actually said to him “if this is a problem, I won’t do it”. Simple as that.
I have never compared the two films and never will. Taking a bunch of things I said years before I even made the film to try and start trouble is typical internet nonsense. I never pointed out flaws in the original. I pointed out things that weren’t in the original that I could put in mine. Not because I thought my way was better, but because I thought it would be different. Since I figured trying to make the exact same film was sort of silly.
Here is cute quote from this bullshit article “I don’t want to jump to conclusions, but I would say that Zombie is totally lying when he says that he likes and respects the original Halloween, but is just saying that for fear of losing fans if he said otherwise.”
Here’s a direct quote for you Amy Martin… “F**K Y** MOTHERF**KING PIECE OF USELESS SH*T!” Don’t misquote that.
BTW your article reads like it was written by a fourth grader.
Safe to say that Rob Zombie is no fan of MoviePilots article and it seems they heard him loud and clear as the article has been pulled down as of me updating this article to include Zombie’s response. You can however still watch the video below which MoviePilot sourced.
