Ruggero Deodato Talks Censorship, Cannibal Holocaust and His New Film
Ruggero Deodato the legend that was behind one of the most controversial films of all time Cannibal Holocaust. it caused up roar in the early eighties and dominated the “video Nasties” list.
Cannibal Holocaust was only released on DVD in the UK on 2001 after having six minutes of footage cut. With that being said a new edit of Cannibal Holocaust is being released in the UK where there will be a screening in London.
Before the screening Deodato will be taking part in a public debate session with the head of the BBFC examiner Craig Lapper which takes place tonight in the UK.
Anyway, Deodato recently spoke with the BBC and talks about his film Cannibal Holocaust;
“The special effects aimed to make people believe what they were seeing was real… “I think the cuts of the new edition are right. If I had the chance to go back in time, I’d have avoided the animal killings. I paid a high price for that, such as losing the pleasure of introducing Cannibal Holocaust to the UK public.”
Deodato briefly spoke about The House on the Edge of the Park II;
“I think its themes are still relevant,” says Deodato. “It will be good to return to this genre, but I never forget that reality is more extreme than any fiction.”
To celebrate the 10 year anniversary of Cannibal Holocaust’s previous examination, the BBFC have passed an 18-rated longer version of the film which will hit DVD and Blu-ray sometime in September via Screen Entertainment.
