Scooby-Doo is Coming Back to the Big Screen

Scooby-Doo, where are you?  It’s been over ten years since the classic cartoon franchise made it’s feature film debut with two live-action adaptations.  And, despite mixed reactions from fans, those two films turned out nice little profits for Warner Bros.

Since then the franchise has returned to it’s television roots in different iterations, including countless direct-to-dvd animated movies.  However, the meddling sleuths and their faithful dog may be making another return to the big screen.

Variety is reporting that Warner Bros. is developing an animated Scooby-Doo feature film with the producers of the original 2002 “Scooby-Doo” film.  The project is still in it’s early stages, but Matt Lieberman has been tapped to help pen a script.

Lieberman is currently a rising talent when it comes to animated family features.  He recently finished writing “Short Circuit” for Dimension, a spec script called “The Pet” for Disney, wrote the remake of “Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride”, and penned “Evil Genius.”

There have been marked improvements in the area of children’s horror with films like “Monster House”, “Frankenweenie”, and “Paranorman.”  Hopefully this Scooby-Doo film will follow suit and try to do something bold and different with the franchise, instead of following in the footsteps of other animated adaptations like “Smurfs” and “Yogi Bear.”
