Steven Spielberg May Bring Extant To TV
Every so often a script hits the Hollywood scene and it suddenly becomes the talk of the town. Not all of these scripts become something, but most of the time the writer generates enough buzz to become a hot commodity in Hollywood circles.
Mickey Fisher is that writer and the script that has everyone talking is Extant, a one-hour sci-fi drama that could be heading to TV. The Wrap has the exclusive details on the script, including this description of the plot:
The script is about John and Molly Watts and their son, a human-like robot named Ethan. Molly, the space-traveling wife, is also pregnant with a baby that is part human and part alien. The family intrigue deepens in subsequent episodes.
One of the talent agents who had seen the script claimed that “Everyone is freaking out about it. It’s ‘A.I.’ as a TV series”
Amblin Entertainment is handling the production of the pilot, but there’s no word on whether or not Steven Spielberg will actually attach his name to it. Given his affinity for the sci-fi, it seems like something he would consider.
While Steven Spielberg is best known for his work in the world of cinema, he’s certainly no stranger to the land of TV. Over the years he’s helped bring such projects like Falling Skies, Smash, The River, and Terra Nova to the small screen. In fact, he just recently announced that he was turning Halo into a TV series for the new Xbox One system.
However, it’s hard to say how much actual contribution Spielberg has had in these television shows. In each of them he seemed to only serve as a producer, which is obviously a big advantage to have for a fledgling TV series. Does Spielberg offer input on the script or set in on production meetings? It’s hard to say. I can’t imagine he’ll have any more involvement in this series than he’s had in previous projects.
