Ten Most Disturbing Horror Movies: You Will Squirm!
There are some movies out there that aren’t necessarily scary, but so disturbing that you can’t stop yourself from squirming around in your seat. Whether they’re excessively bloody and gory, or just plain gross, these films will have you gagging and having to peek through your fingers just to make it through the end. They might not keep you up at night, but these movies will make you very grateful that you’re not in them.
10. Cabin Fever
Personally, one of my favorites. Scary? Not necessarily, but the thought of being overcome by a flesh eating virus is far from comforting. And let’s not forget about that cringe-worthy shaving scene.
9. House of 1000 Corpses
Another film that I wouldn’t say is necessarily scary, but has its fair share of gore. Sure, the concept of being trapped in a house full of psychopathic serial killers has been done before, but House of 1000 Corpses is definitely worth watching. You might even find yourself oddly attached to the eccentric Firefly family towards the end.
8. Saw Series
Everyone loves to hate on the Saw series, with pretty good reason. However, they still have some creative and uncomfortable scenes—perhaps to compensate for the confusing and disorganized plot.
7. Human Centipede
I wasn’t really a fan of this one, but the concept alone is pretty disgusting. As if eating fecal matter wasn’t gross enough
6. Brain Dead/Dead Alive
Dead Alive is one of the few movies that actually made me gag. A wonderful example of horror and comedy, Dead Alive definitely delivers in terms of gore and grossness in general. It’s pretty cheesy, but in the best way possible.
5. Audition
Audition was definitely one of those films that you watch, and the whole time you’re wondering, WTF is happening. The concept is weird on its own—a man holds fake casting auditions to find a wife for himself—and the content is fairly disturbing as well. The plot is a little confusing, but Audition will have you squirming in your seat until the end.
4. Haute Tension
Haute Tension, known as High Tension in North America, is definitely what I would call a mind fuck. It contains some fairly graphic and gory killing scenes, as well as delivers a healthy dose of suspense. A little underrated, but so worth watching.
3. Martyrs
If you haven’t seen this one yet, you’re seriously missing out. It is scary on so many different levels. Not only concept wise, but visually as well. Plus, there’s a graphic shotgun scene in the first act. Who doesn’t love a good shotgun scene?
2. A Serbian Film
A Serbian Film follows a washed up porn star after he agrees to star in an “art film.” The movie is basically a compilation of everything that is horrible. It is extremely difficult to watch for portraying extreme sexual taboos and other gag-worthy actions. Two words: newborn porn. I wouldn’t be able to sit through it again, for it was extremely sick and twisted, but overall well done and worth watching if you’re looking to be shocked and disgusted.
1. Cannibal Holocaust
If you’re unfamiliar with this film, you are definitely missing out. The director actually fell into some legal issues after the making of this film because of its disturbing content. It follows the found footage of a group of missing filmmakers after journeying into the Amazon to capture footage of the cannibalistic tribes. As well as providing a thoughtful social commentary of the modern world, Cannibal Holocaust is one of the most disturbing movies I have ever seen.
