‘The Conjuring 3’ Could Take Place in the ’80s
Despite “The Conjuring” proving to be a profitable franchise after the release of “Conjuring 2” we still haven’t had any official word yet about another “Conjuring” sequel. But let’s not kid ourselves, it’s going to happen.
And while a “Conjuring 3” might be a ways down the road, it would seem that James Wan is already putting some thought into it. Speaking with IGN about his future plans for the Warrens, director James Wan dropped this little tidbit about when he’d like to set the movie.
I do have something specific but I’m not going to say it. But I will say this – I do think Conjuring 1 and 2 are both set in the 70s, I think Conjuring 3 has got to be set in the 80s.
So the Warrens are handing to the land of Reaganomics and Pepsi Free. Given that Wan has a specific idea for a movie set in the ’80s, I have to wonder if he’ll be taking on a case specifically from that era. A quick look at the Wikipedia page for the Warrens reveals a few “big” cases from the ’80s that could make for potentially interesting films.
Starting in ’81 there’s the story of Arne Johnson who killed his landlord and claimed he was possessed by the devil. Not a major story, but one that could serve as the opening to the film. It’s possible they could do “The Haunting in Connecticut”, but I wonder if they’d be hesitant to do so because of the 2009 film that was a loose adaptation of the original Warren case.
I think the most likely candidate might be the the Smurl case which was about a family dealing three ghosts and a demon who sexually assaulted them. That seems to have the core elements that have been featured in previous “Conjuring” films.
What do you think? What Warren adventure would you like to see brought to life?
