The Conjuring Teams with VICE to bring you The 3:07 AM Project
A few hours ago, The 3:07 AM Project came online and destroyed my pre-conceived notions of what a short film could be.
The boys and girls behind The Conjuring have teamed up with VICE, and four renowned filmmakers to create a horror anthology of short films dubbed The 3:07 AM Project. The films each run about a minute long, and all center on the Devil’s hour 3:07 AM.
Spanish Academy Award nominee Nacho Vigalondo directs the first in the anthology called This One, For the Lady. I can’t give too much away without spoiling the entire film, but rest assured, it was thoroughly creepy with a unique and surprising twist ending.
I nearly leaped off the floor when I saw Max Landis’ name for the second short. Landis wrote the extremely well received 2012 found footage superhero flick Chronicle, and has now added the short film The Seance to his credits. Again, I don’t want to give too much away but Landis’ short was face-paced, intense, and succeeds in making you feel just as panicked as the characters on the screen.
The third short comes from director Ti West, who’s name you might recognize from The House of the Devil, The Innkeepers, V/H/S, and The ABCs of Death. I found West’s short, The Box, to be the weakest of the four. Although it involved clowns and contortionists (both very unsettling things), the film suffered from a lack of story and seemed to just exist to scare you.
Finally, the coupe de grace, Jason Eisener’s One Last Dive had me catching my breath after doing a back flip over the couch. Eisener is best known for the grindhouse flick Hobo With a Shotgun, although he’s also directed segments for The ABCs of Death and V/H/S 2. Honestly…this final short was absolutely terrifying and it’s no surprise they decided to end it on One Last Dive.
Props to The Conjuring, VICE, and the filmmakers for seriously delivering on a quality short project. It’s truly rare to see something of this caliber used for promoting a film. Bravo! Bravo!
