The First Poster for Ti West’s “The Sacrament”

Ti West, the man who brought us “House of the Devil” and “The Innkeepers”, can currently be seen in theaters playing a bit part in “You’re Next.”  However, you’ll soon be able to see him back in the director’s chair when his next film, “The Sacrament”, debuts at the Venice Film Festival next week.  Then again when it premieres at the Toronto Film Festival.

If, like me, you won’t be able to make it to either of those events, then we have something to tide you over.  Entertainment Weekly has debuted the first look at the teaser poster for “The Sacrament.”  The poster, which you can view below, looks appropriately aged to match the 70s style quality that they were aiming for.

The deliberate aging of the poster isn’t just for flair though, it’s intricately tied into the inspiration behind “The Sacrament.”  In the late 70s a settlement known as Jonestown was formed in Guyana and was led by a man named Jim Jones.  A series of twisted events led Jones to call for a “revolutionary suicide” in which 918 people either committed mass suicide or were murdered.

The Sacrament follows a similar tale, as evident in this plot synopsis from EW. “Three magazine journalists (Joe Swanberg, AJ Bowen, and Kentucker Audley) visit a relative (Amy Seimetz) at a religious commune, where the mysterious Father (Gene Jones) is the unchallenged leader. Like all infamous cult tales, it doesn’t end well.”
