‘The Keep’ Documentary Has Been Pushed Back to 2017
Stewart Buck’s upcoming documentary A World War II Fairytale: The Making of Michael Mann’s The Keep was something I was truly looking forward to this year, sadly though it appears that the documentary has been pushed back to a 2017 release with licensing being a key player in this decision. It’s a bummer, especially for any of you who pledged during their Indiegogo campaign, but all is not lost. Stewart Buck has issued a statement regarding the issue and we have that for you below.
Per the official release:
Dear friends,
Apologies for the lack of updates since we finished the campaign. We’ve provided the main reasons behind the delays below that will help you understand our decisions, which, in some cases have been forced against us.
Licensing
As i type, we’re currently in talks over licensing material which forms an important part of the projects completion. Unfortunately we’ve had to run on their timescale recently, rather than our own which can be frustrating, but i’m pleased to say we’re making progress toward finishing the project this year.
This period is critical in terms of providing a much more comprehensive look at the making of THE KEEP and Mann’s original vision and many documentaries face these kinds of challenges as a result, especially if the filmmakers want to create the best product and not rush things through.
Ultimately, we’re looking at a picture lock by Dec 2016 and we’ve made that clear to our colleagues.
Festival Circuit
As well as support from you, there’s been a tremendous amount of interest in showing the completed documentary and it makes sense for us to make way for the festival circuit too, so that it gets maximum exposure around the world. The documentary is designed to look and feel like a cinematic experience that sucks you back into the world and aesthetic of THE KEEP and every element that goes into the making of A World War II Fairytale will be created by the best people available during post-production.
Indiegogo Campaign
Although we fell well beyond meeting our goal through last years Indiegogo campaign, any further fund-raising campaigns are unlikely at this stage of completion. Last year was a truly unique opportunity for you to support the project by helping us get to the next stage and we did just that. We enjoyed the experience, but the project, we feel, is not the best fit for this model. It takes a lot to mount these campaigns successfully, something which will end up being a distraction during the critical licensing and post-production phases. That’s not to say that there maybe other areas we’ll look into once we get to a more concrete platform of a release schedule in 2017.
Further clip previews from the documentary
We’ve chosen to disable any clip previews from the upcoming documentary in advance of release due to the problem of piracy we’re all facing on a daily basis. A marketing campaign including the trailer and BTS of the documentaries’ making will be set in motion as and when we feel comfortable to release details and we’ll be giving Indiegogo backers an exclusive look into that first before anywhere else.
I hope the above answers the most important areas. All the prior links will be updated accordingly. As a result of this delay, any questions or concerns about your pledges, pre-orders etc, we’d be happy to answer them @[email protected]
