Things to See and Do at San Diego Comic Con for the Horror Fan
The big show in San Diego is finally upon us and it’s time to head to into the breach once more to see all the glorious nerd offerings put on display at this year’s Comic Con. But if you were one of the countless individuals who were unable to snag a ticket for the annual event, don’t fret, there’s still plenty of things to see and do without a badge.
If you’re in the San Diego area and looking for things to see and do that would appeal to your horror sensibilities, then here’s a list of what you can find:
All Week
FOX Experience
This one is a little sparse when it comes to “horror” experiences. Sadly it doesn’t look like they’ll have any off site promotions for their upcoming “Exorcist” tv series, but you can visit the Hilton Bayfront Lawn to experience the new “Rocky Horror Picture Show” in VR.
“Fear the Walking Dead” Abigail Ship
Want to step aboard the kick-ass Abigail boat featured on “Fear the Walking Dead”? You’ll get your chance this year as the luxurious ship makes landfall in San Diego. From Thursday to Saturday you’ll be able to see the Abigail in person and step aboard it. The ship will be located at the Fifth Avenue Pier behind the convention center.
FXhibition Art Installation:
FX is looking to have a big presence at this year’s Comic Con with something they’re calling the FXhibition. It’s essentially a mini-art installation that’ll feature various pieces of art representing some of their hit shows like “The Strain”, “Archer”, “American Horror Story”, and so on. They’re also going to be featuring a VR experience themed around “American Horror Story.” Here’s a breakdown of what will be featured in the exhibition:
For attendees who love a thrill, American Horror Story will curate a virtual reality experience unlike any other that takes participants on a unique journey through terrifying encounters inspired by the hair-raising series. TheAHS Fearless VR Experience will be an opportunity for American Horror Story fans to become a part of their favorite show and test the boundaries of their own fear. To avoid waiting in long lines, fans can reserve a spot at AHSReservations.com, beginning July 19th.
FXhibition will also offer Comic-Con revelers iconic photo opportunities with some of the network’s most beloved series. Art installations include:
- The Strain will erect a 25-foot “infected” Lady Liberty statue.
- Sex&Drugs&Rock&Roll’s turbulent rock culture will be illustrated through a dramatic larger-than-life installation, featuring a smashed guitar with broken pieces several feet in size for a life size exhibit.
- On display in the FX Sculpture Garden, fans can take advantage of social media worthy photo opportunities with iconic characters sculpted as busts including, Archer’s “Pam Poovey,” American HorrorStory: Asylum’s White Nun, Man Seeking Woman’s Troll, The Strain’s “Quinlan,” Baskets’ Clown and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’s “Frank Reynolds” as the “troll” character from The Nightman Cometh.
Camp Conival
Nerdist and Geek & Sundry are partnering up again for another round of Camp Conival. This thing is practically a convention onto itself and it’s free to participate. All week long there will be guest and panels featuring a wide array of horror alumni. For example on Saturday they’ll have Adam Wingard and the cast of “The Woods”, Misha Collins from “Supernatural”, and the “Ash vs Evil Dead” cast. You can check out the full list of Camp Conival guests here.
Wednesday July 20th
“Wynona Earp” Cast Signing
I haven’t seen SyFy’s newest show “Wynona Earp”, but if you have and you dig it then you’d be glad to hear that the cast will be turning up for a special free signing at the San Diego Comic Art Gallery between 6pm and 8pm.
Saturday July 23rd
Zombie Walk
The San Diego Zombie Walk finally returns to Comic Con this year after taking a few years off to recuperate from the car incident that nearly derailed it. The event will take place at 6pm in the Gaslamp Quarter.
“The Final Girls” Midnight Screening and “I Scream Truck”
Despite coming out last year “The Final Girls” is having a pretty significant presence at this year’s Comic Con. Along with an official panel dubbed “The Final Girls and the Future of Midnight Movies” they’re going to be having a special midnight screening on Saturday that you can purchase tickets for here. There’s also going to be a “Final Girls” themed Ice Cream truck that’ll be located at the Grand Horton.
But if you don’t want to see just horror events when you head down to Comic Con you’ll also find plenty of experiences for things like Adult Swim, “Game of Thrones”, “Assassins Creed”, “South Park”, and many more. For a great site that has a comprehensive list of events I recommend checking out the Unofficial San Diego Comic Con Blog which has a great calendar of events to browse.
