Threats of Protesting Lead to Cancellation of ‘Jeepers Creepers 3’ Premiere Screening

There’s no getting around it. Victor Salva was convicted of some pretty god awful things.  After some deep consideration I decided that I wouldn’t be covering “Jeepers Creepers 3” on the site.  I know that goes against what I’m “supposed to do,” but the great thing about this site is we can talk about whatever we want to talk to about.  I would not hold it against anyone else on this site if they wanted to talk about “Jeepers Creepers 3” just like I would not hold it against any other website, but I just have no desire to report on this film due to the circumstances surrounding the director.

So you might be asking why are we talking about it now?  Well, this post is not a promotional piece for the film.  It’s to show that if you believe strongly enough in something, you can make some kind of impact.  Even with something as seemingly frivolous as our entertainment.

On September 13th “Jeepers Creepers 3” was set to have its world premiere TCL Chinese Theater in Los Angeles.  The premiere would have featured guests from all three films hosting a Q&A and would have been a double feature of the first and third film.  The screening sold out pretty quickly, so it was clear there was a great deal of interest in it.  However, TCL ultimately decided to cancel the screening due to numerous threats of protest. According to reports from HFN the theater was told that not only would people protest the premiere screening, but they would continue to protest every screening after that as long as the film was playing in theater.

Soon after receiving the protest notifications, the theater opted to pull the screening from their schedule and issued this response to people who had purchased tickets (also from HFN):

Dear Valued Customer,

We would like to inform you that due to events beyond our control, the screening event hosted by @Moviedude18 for “Jeepers Creepers and Jeepers Creepers 3” on Wednesday September 13, 2017 will no longer take place at the TCL Chinese 6 Theatres. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause your party. We have worked with Fandango to refund your purchase directly. You should see the refund in your account within the next few days. We would like to offer you free passes. You may redeem them at the box office upon your next visit by showing this email or we can mail them to you if you provide us with your mailing address.

Again, we apologize for the inconvenience.

Sincerely,

TCL Chinese Theatres Management

So there you go.  “Jeepers Creepers 3” will still have a release date and will be released in theaters for special screenings, but in this instance the film will not be shown.  So it goes to show that if you feel strongly enough about something, then say something.  Not everyone will agree with you, but you have a right vocalize your displeasure with something.  And maybe it’ll cause a change and maybe it won’t.

At the end of the day I won’t tell anyone to not see this movie or to see it. That’s their own decision to make. I can only tell you what I’m going to do. I probably won’t see this film, I probably won’t review it, and I probably won’t talk about it again after this.  If someone else on this site decides to do that, I support their right to do so.  And if people have criticisms, I will also support their right to air them.  At the end of the day this is a personal choice that we must all come to and should be willing to respectfully discuss.

And if you’re someone that has read this entire article and thought “Wait, what the hell did Victor Salva do?” Then, I’m really sorry, I probably should have mentioned that earlier. Simply put, he is a convicted child molester.  I don’t really want to go into the details here, but I invite you to read this excellent article from 1995 that goes into more depth and highlights another protest surrounding a film he released at the time called “Powder.”
