Top 10 Best Films to Watch During Halloween
It is about that time again when the freaks come out to play and the black cats wander the neighborhood. Its Halloween! What does that mean? It means we become the go to friend for great horror films. Every other month people wonder if we are mentally stable.. Maybe thats just me.. Anyway this list is definitely not in any kind of order. I listed these movies in the exact order I thought of them. So enjoy..
Halloween
No you can’t go through the Halloween season without watching at least one of the Halloween films.. Especially John Carpenters best, the original Halloween. This is one of the best slasher films around and with good reason. The acting is spot on from Jamie Curtis and Carpenters score makes for some creepy atmosphere. If you don’t watch this during Halloween.. I think something is wrong with you..
Trick R Treat
Now this is another film that is perfect for this type of year. Trick or Treaters, monsters of the dark, scary legends.. Its all there. When I first watched this I have to admit I wasn’t blown away but that was because the hype for this was massive. But it has grown on me and should be a staple in your Halloween que. This also gets bonus points for being an anthology in my book.
Mad Monster Party
Now this a stop motion animation film from Rankin & Bass who were made famous for their Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer special. This time they took on all the classic movie monsters and did an amazing job. Now this one is here for nostalgic reasons for me. I won’t lie I still enjoy the hell out of it though. I have watched this movie every Halloween since I can remember. This is also perfect if you have younger kids you want to enjoy a good movie with.
Disney’s The Legend of Sleepy Hollow
This is another film that as a young trick or treater I absolutely loved. When I would go to this Haunted Forest they would screen this movie and give everyone donuts and apple cider. I still love this flick and I wish Disney would find their balls and start making more things like this. If you haven’t seen this yet you need to get on that.. Step your life game up.
Pet Semetary
Now this is probably my favorite horror film ever. Mainly because this movie still scares me to this day. When I was younger I couldn’t even sit through the whole movie. The sequences that scared me the most was Zelda when she is sick in her bed. Just the thought of her locked up in a back room dying was frightening enough. But when she gets up and starts screaming.. Forget about it. “NEVER WALK AGAIN! NEVER WALK AGAIN!” Fuck!
Halloween III: Season of the Witch
Now this is one of the most under appreciated films I have ever seen. This is one of the best of the Halloween franchise, much better than anything that came after it. This also contains one of the coolest Halloween jingles you will ever hear. I guarantee you will be singing that song counting down the days til Halloween.
Phantasm
This is another of my favorite films which makes this list on its merit alone. I love every film that Don Coscarelli has made. He has never disappointed me with any of his work, unlike some other directors. Each of the Phantasm films get better and better. But the original has a very nice indie charm to it. Check it out.
Zombi 2
Now during Halloween you have to watch at least one zombie movie. At least I do. That movie is always Zombi 2 directed by Lucio Fulci. This movie has the best looking zombies you will find with some epic scenes including Zombie vs Shark. This movie is so big it has even been featured in a Best Buy commercial. Also I have to say “Giant Fucking Splinter”.
Phenomena
Since we are talking about the very best directors in horror, Lucio Fulci, John Carpenter, Don Coscarelli we probably should mention Dario Argento. This guy is a mastermind at making some really weird and odd flicks. One of my favorite films he made was Phenomena with a very young Jennifer Connelly. Basically she controls bugs.. I know that won’t sell you on it but take my word this movie is bad ass.
Creepshow 2
Last but not least the George Romero produced Creepshow 2. Another anthology because, well, they are kick ass. The first film was good but I always enjoyed the stories in two much more. The Raft and The Hitchhiker are definitely the strongest stories from all of the Creepshow films. Plus if its Halloween you have got to include at least a little bit of Romero.
