Top 10 Buzz Worthy Horror Films of 2013
Now that I look back at 2013 and all the movies that came out, I realize that I actually enjoyed last year’s horror way more than I did in 2012. We saw a few remakes, some sequels, and even a few good original movies.
I know a lot of people won’t agree with some films on my list, but hey, that’s why we all have opinions, right? Please do keep in mind, there are a few that I didn’t get a chance to watch, so that may explain the omission of a few of your favorites. I think I’ll just jump right into it here…
Mama
There seems to be a lot of negative stuff going around about this one, but I actually really enjoyed it. Horror fans are always asking for new, fresh, and original content for movies, yet as soon as one comes out, they poop all over it. Mama had some creepy moments and although I do agree that some of the CGI did take away from it just a bit, it still was a very nice entry into horror film history.
The Conjuring
I will admit I am a James Wan fan-boy. I pretty much love everything he does, before it even comes out… With that being said, I actually didn’t really expect much from The Conjuring after viewing the trailers, when they first surfaced. Surprisingly, I got not only an awesome haunted house story from this one, but also a sick and twisted exorcism movie, as well!
Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters
I don’t understand how anyone could watch this movie and not have fun with it! I thought Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters was going to be pretty bad, but decided to give it a shot anyway. Boy, am I glad I did. With some awesome creature design and a bunch of Raimi-esque humor and horror combined, I loved every second of this movie.
Evil Dead
I know there are tons of loyal Evil Dead fans out there that shed a few tears and uttered a few expletives, after first hearing of an Evil Dead remake. What we ended up getting, however, was a fresh take on an old tale, with some insanely awesome gore and make-up effects, which managed to still stay loyal to the original franchise. Fede Alvarez did an outstanding job with this one and every one of you guys should watch it, if you haven’t already!
Maniac
Out of everyone I’ve ever spoken to about the original Maniac, I think I am the only one who didn’t like it…at all. Upon hearing of the pending remake, I felt it only natural to have watched the original first, so I gave it a shot for the first time this year. In my opinion, the remake is light years ahead of the original and Elijah Wood did an amazing job as the creepy Frank. The camera work was brilliant and made for an exciting new take on the old-school slasher.
V/H/S/ 2
I actually was really excited about the resurgence in popularity of the anthology horror film this year. I loved V/H/S, but was extremely disappointed with The ABC’s of Death. It took me quite a while to rebound from that disappointment, but I finally had enough nerve to sit and watch V/H/S/ 2 and I ended up enjoying it a lot; even more than the original, actually. V/H/S/ 2 delivers some of the best entries in anthology history, with a nice variety and each one having something cool to enjoy about it. Check it out, if you haven’t done so already!
Bad Milo!
I usually am very wary about spending time, watching horror movies that are heavy on comedy. I’ve seen some pretty awful horror comedies in my day and needless to say, was very hesitant about one concerning a creature living inside of a guy’s ass. When I finally did check it out, I thought Bad Milo! was extremely well done and had more to it than meets the eye. The acting was very well done and the story is actually really great in this one.
Frankenstein’s Army
I love found footage films and will pretty much watch one, no matter the subject matter. When I heard of [another] one about Dr. Frankenstein and his monsters, I knew I was in for a treat. Frankenstein’s Army has some of the best ‘creature’ designs, if you can even call them that, and while it starts off kind of slow, things really pick up in the second and third acts. If you’re a fan of found footage or classic monsters, or just want to see a really cool, original film, definitely check this one out.
Insidious: Chapter 2
You know James Wan is doing something right when he has two movies on a top horror list. Again, there seems to be some hatred revolving around the Insidious series, but I really do enjoy both entries so far. Insidious: Chapter 2 was able to expand on the ideas expressed in its predecessor, while still bringing some new things to the table. With some pretty creepy moments to some pretty funny ones, Insidious: Chapter 2 is definitely worth a watch.
Grabbers
I freakin’ love creature features and anything I can compare to Shaun of the Dead meets Attack the Block, is bound to be amazing. I had so much fun with Grabbers; The creatures looked amazing, the story was fun and lighthearted, and the acting was superb. If you have not seen this movie, you need to drop what you’re doing and do so now.
