Upcoming 2011 Horror Movies
A little while ago Poppascotch did a piece looking at upcoming 2011 horror movies and since some dates have changed and some new releases have been announced I wanted to take a moment and recap upcoming horror movies for 2011 and add some new dates and titles that were not available when our first list of upcoming 2011 horror films was generated.
Below is my list of upcoming horror films for 2011 with trailers for each film where available ( and a few 2012 releases for good measure )
Scream 4 – In theatres this Friday: Wes Craven is back in a big kind of way with Scream 4. This new film is being billed as a franchise reboot and will lead to even more films. With some luck this movie will restore some of the magic of the first film. We already have a video review on site and you can look for my review on Friday.
The Resident – Now on DVD. This film for whatever reason never saw the light of day despite a top notch cast featuring Hillary Swank and Jeffrey Dean Morgan. When a young doctor suspects she may not be alone in her new Brooklyn loft, she learns that her landlord has formed a frightening obsession with her.
Stake Land : Limited Release April 2011 – Starring indie goddess Danielle Harris its about a future America where vampires have overrun the world. To me it sounds like a low budget take on Daybreakers.
Black Death is directed by Christopher Smith and stars Sean Bean. Christopher Smith is the director behind Severance one of my favourite horror comedies and The Triangle which alot of you rave about even if I for whatever reason kept falling asleep watching it. Set during the time of the first outbreak of bubonic plague in England, a young monk is tasked with learning the truth about reports of people being brought back to life in a small village.
Rise of the Planet of the Apes – August 2011 : James Franco and John Lithgow headline this film which tells the origins of the Planet of the Apes. In the film Franco plays a research scientist working on a cure for alzhemiers who inadvertently brings about the fall of mankind and the Rise of the Planet of the Apes. The trailer looks fantastic and although I don’t buy how they will make the ape uprising plausible I will be first in line to see this one.
The Vanishing on 7th Street – On DVD May 17th: This film stars Hayden Christensen and Thandie Newton who is one of my favourite actresses. Incredibly gorgeous she has delivered some promising roles in both indie and big title releases. The film is directed by Brad Anderson who directed the horror favourite Session 9, Transsiberian and The Machinist starring Christian Bale. In The Vanishing on 7th Street the population of Detroit has almost completely disappeared, but a few remain. As daylight disappears they realize that the Dark is coming for them.
Mothers Day Remake – No Release Date Yet. Mothers Day is directed by Darren Lynn Bousman the director of SAW 2 and is about the sadistic members of a villainous family who return to their childhood home to terrorize the new home owners and their guests. This is a remake of the 1980 film which shared the same title.
Rubber – On DVD June 7th: Rubber is one of those movies you are either going to love or outright hate but I for one can not wait to check it out. Directed by Quentin Dupieux it tells the story of Robert, an inanimate tire who discovers his destructive telepathic powers, he soon sets his sights on a desert town; in particular, a mysterious woman becomes his obsession.
John Carpenters The Ward – Unknown Release Date: I am a huge fan of John Carpenters and have seen all of his films. I am such a sucker for his cinematic style that I even count Ghosts of Mars as one of my favourites. That should tell you alot since so many of you despise that movie. The Ward stars the stunning Amber Heard and is as you guessed it about an institutionalized young woman who becomes terrorized by a ghost.
Dylan Dog — Dead of Night: In theatres April 29th: I am honestly not sure what I think of this movie. From what I have seen it is a bit of a mixed bag. The film stars Brandon Routh.. aka Superman and is about the adventures of supernatural private eye, Dylan Dog, who seeks out the monsters of the Louisiana bayou in his signature red shirt, black jacket, and blue jeans.
Priest – Theatrical Release on May 13th: Priest stars Paul Bettany ( Legion ) and has been bumped more times than you can shake a stick. That said the movie looks like it could be a real sneaker since from the trailers it looks to have exactly what I like most. It appears to be a mix of Blade meets DayBreaker meets.. well… Legion! In the film Paul Bettany plays a priest who disobeys church law to track down the vampires who kidnapped his niece.
Dont Be Afraid of the Dark – Theatrical Release August 13th: I am not a big fan of Katie Holmes or Guy Pearce but this film is directed by Guillermo Del Toro which cancels that factor out completely. This will be a must see film for me. The film tells the story of a young girl sent to live with her father and his new girlfriend discovers creatures in her new home who want to claim her as one of their own.
Fright Night – Theatrical Release October : This 2011 release is A remake of the 1985 comedy-horror picture directed by Tom Holland about a teenager who discovers his new next-door neighbor is a vampire. The remake stars Collin Farrell and Anton Yelchin. Its gotten mixed early reviews so we will have to wait and see how this one pans out.
Final Destination 5 3D: Theatrical Release August 2011 – First off I have to ask myself why? Do we really need a fifth movie? More importantly do we really need a fifth movie in 3D? I liked the film franchise but that was in its early days and for me this franchise has long lost its lustre. In Final Destination 5 3D Survivors of a suspension-bridge collapse learn there’s no way you can cheat Death.
The Thing – Theatrical Release in October 2011 – I love John Carpenters remake of The Thing but also have major concerns over this remake. The film has had alot of rewrites and production delays and has me concerned that this might be a remake we all wish never happened. That said though John Carpenters 1982 remake of The Thing is as good as the original and in fact in many ways is superior. So you never know. The Thing is about an arctic research station which unearths a ‘thing’ in the snow and the mayhem that ensues.
Paranormal Activity 3 – Theatrical Release October 2011 – Absolutely nothing is known about the third film in the Paranormal Activity franchise but safe to bet it will be low budget and likely lure in audiences in droves making the studio some mad cash.
Kevin Smiths Red State – Sometime in 2011 : Kevin Smith is going to be distributing this film himself and so far the early reviews have been mixed. Its Kevin’s first foray into horror and at best people say its wordy and at other times they say its horrible. Anyway you count it as a huge Kevin Smith fan I want to see what he does with the horror genre. Set in Middle America Kevin Smiths Red State is about a group of teens who receive an online invitation for sex, though they soon encounter fundamentalists with a much more sinister agenda.
11-11-11: Theatrical Release November 11th, 2011 – Darren Lynn Boussman is going to be a busy guy with not one but two major releases coming. This one is a supernatural tale set on 11:11 on the 11th day of the 11th month and concerning a entity from another world that enters the earthly realm through Heaven’s 11th gate. Kinda sounds like Insidious meets The Ninth Gate.
Piranha 3DD – Theatrical Release November 23rd 2011 – You know what we need? We need more of Kelly Brook naked in 3D with big flesh eating piranha. Thats right kids the powers that be are going to milk more TNA and life from the Piranha franchise with a 3D sequel. The good news here is that FEAST director John Gulager will be directing. Let’s hope it is as good as FEAST and not as horrible as the FEAST sequels which were horrendous.
The Factory – Unknown 2011 Release: We have been talking about this movie since early 2009 and everytime I turn around it keeps getting bumped. This film stars Jennifer Carpenter and John Cusask and is about an obsessed cop on the trail of a serial killer prowling the streets of Buffalo, N.Y. When his teenage daughter disappears, he drops any professional restraint to catch the sadistic killer.
The Woman In Black – February 2012 Release: Harry Potter takes on the supernatural as Daniel Radcliffe forays into In The Woman in Black Danielle Radcliffe plays a young lawyer who travels to a remote village to organize a recently deceased client’s papers, where he discovers the ghost of a scorned woman set on vengeance.
Joss Whedon’s Cabin In The Woods – Unknown 2011 Release: I am a huge fan of Joss Whedon’s and am really excited to see him visit the horror genre with his own take on the classic cabin in the woods horror tale. The film is being directed by Drew Goddard and kept well under wraps but that hasn’t stopped this film from becoming one of the most buzzed about films of 2011.
The Haunting in Georgia – Likely direct to DVD 2011 – This one is a sequel to A Haunting in Connecticut which begs the question did it need a sequel? The film stars Katee Sackhoff who is probably best known from Battlestar Gallactica or White Noise 2. A bit off topic but I was quite surprised how good White Noise 2 was.
Isopod – Unknown 2011 Release – Directed by Barry Levinson and starring Andy Stahl this film is about an ecological disaster that spread terror in a small town. Barry Levinson is the director of Sleepers and Sphere so it should be interesting to see how this one pans out.
The Cold – Likely 2012 and not 2011 – This one was supposed to be slated for the end of 2011 but it now looks like an early 2012 release. The movie is about a group of friends who head into the wilderness for their annual hunting trip only to confront their war torn past and a devilish secret. It is directed by Spanish director Daniel Calparsoro
REC Genesis: Likely Direct to DVD in 2011 — The talented Spanish filmmakers are back with another new REC film. The action in [REC]3 Genesis encompasses the events of the first two films, and after the sense of claustrophobia previously experienced, the action now takes place miles away from the original location and partly in broad daylight, giving the film an entirely fresh, yet disturbing new reality. The infection has left the building. In a clever twist that draws together the plots of the first two movies, this third part of the saga also works as a decoder to uncover information hidden in the first two films and leaves the door open for the final instalment, the future [REC]4 Apocalypse
Wrong Turn 4 – Direct to DVD October 2011 – Starring Terra Vnessa this is the latest low budget instalment in the Wrong Turn film franchise. I loved the first one but passed on the last two because they just looked far too low brow for my liking. Wrong Turn 4 sees a group of friends get lost in a winter storm and get trapped in an abandon Sanitarium where you guessed it… they run into some trouble.
The Raven – Late 2011, Early 2012 Release – The Raven stars John Cusask who will also appear in The Factory and co-stars drop dead gorgeous Alice Eve. It is a a fictionalized account of the last days of Edgar Allan Poe’s life, in which the poet is in pursuit of a serial killer whose murders mirror those in the writer’s stories.
John Dies At the End: Theatrical Release in Early 2012 — Directed by Don Coscarelli is the tale of two college drop outs / slackers who must fight to save the world from an invasion from another dimension. It sounds like a mix of Jack Brooks Monster Slayer meets Shaun of the Dead and that to me is one hell of a good thing!
The Innkeepers – Unknown 2011 Theatrical Release : Directed by Ti West who brought us House of the Devil it stars Sara Paxton and is about two workers working at a soon to be closed Inn which just so happens to be haunted.
The Human Centipede 2: Full Sequence: Likely Direct to DVD in 2011: The director Tom Six returns to direct the sequel to The Human Centipede. I really enjoyed the original film which is about a mad doctor with a sick fascination with ‘the human centipede’ but frankly see no logic or need for a sequel. Perhaps I am alone in my feelings but as fun as the first film was I do not get the need for a sequel. Perhaps however like HOSTEL 2 it will surprise and entertain me.
The Collection: Likely direct to dvd in 2011 : Marcus Dunstan takes a stab at a sequel to 2009’s The Collector. Marcus Dunstan wrote the original FEAST movie which is the reason I will be watching closely to see where the sequel to the 2009 serial killer film goes. Marcus Dunstan also wrote the horrible Feast 2 and Feast 3 which will mean I will also have some hesitation on this sequel.
Knights of Badassdom – Unknown 2011 Theatrical Release – Directed by Joe Lynch and starring Sarah Conner Chonicles Summer Glau this film is about a group of adult live action roleplayers who accidentally unleash a demon and must fight to save the world. Joe Lynch directed Wrong Turn 2 so I am a bit hesitant on this one. Also not entirely sure if this will see a theatrical release or a dump direct to dvd. Either way I will be keeping an eye on this since the premise is quite promising.
Apollo 18 – Early 2012 Release – Originally this film was slated to hit theatres this month but then out of the blue the studio buried it and pushed it back to a 2012 release. Extremely odd to say the least. The film is about a ‘supposedly true’ mission to the Moon which uncovers life.
The Apparition: Early 2012 Release – Directed by Todd Lincoln and starring Ashley Greene this presumably teen horror flick is about a college couple who are being haunted by a supernatural being after a ‘college experiment’ goes wrong. Ashley Green starred in the hilarious indie horror comedy OTIS but is best known to teen girls for her roles in the Twilight Film Franchise. The film co-stars Tom Felton.
Which of these films are you most looking forward to? Did I miss any key ones that should have made the list?
