What Bad Luck! 5 Accidental Movie Monsters
The Frankenstein Monster. This poor creature was put together from various bits of dead bodies, and didn’t ask to be brought back to life but was the victim of the ambitions and dreams of a scientist who wanted to play god. In some versions he starts off ok but things soon start to go wrong. No wonder the poor chap used to get in a mood! The Fly (1958 & 1986) The Fly is about a scientist trying to come up with a great way of transporting objects and eventually people through time and space. When he has a good amount of success with objects he tries it out on a living thing ( a luckless pussy cat in the 1958 version & an unfortunate baboon in the 1986 version) but that goes disastorously wrong. Feeling bad about the animals, he corrects the mistake and tries it out on himself rather than risk another living thing and gets mixed up with a unseen fly in the machine with devastating and tragic results. It is Not Andre’s ( in the 1958 film) or Seth’s fault he is a monster it all comes down to a pesky fly in the ointment.
It’s Alive ( 1974 & 2008) The blurb for this film was “There’s something wrong with the Davis Baby, it’s alive”! A bit harsh on the poor little mite! It wasn’t his fault he turned out like he did, a big headed, sharp toothed murderous baby that gives hospital delivery staff a murderous surprise. Depending on whether we are talking the 1974 or the 2008 version we can blame experimental drugs or pollution. A sad tale for a poor little bugger who doesn’t even have a cuddly toy.
The Incredible Melting Man ( 1977) Poor astronaut Steve West is sent as the first man to Saturn and is hit by rays from the rings of Saturn. When he returns to Earth he doesn’t look very well at all and is Hospitalised and starts turning into a melting blob. This makes him a tad grumpy and he escapes from the hospital with a craving for human flesh in a pathetic attempt to stop himself melting away. He eventually melts away to nothing ( shades of the wizard of oz) and what do they do? They pick another poor sap and rocket him off to Saturn to try again! will humans never learn?
An American Werewolf In London ( 1981) Yes i could have picked almost any werewolf character in any film but poor old David Kessler is as good example as any. He didn’t ask to be attacked by a furry creature while hiking on the English Moors. He never asked for his friend and fellow victim to haunt him and give him warnings about what is going to happen to him. He thinks his luck is changing when his love life perks up when he meets a sexy English nurse, but that old full moon soon has him out howling and looking for flesh and blood. Poor David is aware of what he becomes and is a tragic figure who was in the wrong place at the wrong time and you sympathise with the poor guy.
