‘Winchester’ Debuts at the Third Spot this Weekend- Did you Watch?
I’ve been to the Winchester Mansion and, despite all the mystique surrounding it, it’s a fairly normal building without much “spookiness” surrounding it. It certainly is unique and fascinating, but it never struck me as the kind of place that was haunted even though the way it’s designed was to deal with spirits. However, that being said, it’s an awesome setting for a ghost story and with a cast that includes Helen Mirren and Jason Clarke the “Winchester” movie should’ve been a solid film. Should have been.
Unfortunately for “Winchester” it debuted this weekend at the #3 spot and pulled in less than $10 million dollars, which is pretty surprising considering horror films as of late have been enjoying fairly good openings. Instead it was bested by “Jumanji” which hit the number one spot again. Keep in mind, “Jumanji” came out on December 20th. So the fact that “Winchester” debuted at #3 while a two month old movie held the number one spot is especially wild.
There are probably a lot of factors that led to “Winchester” debuting so low, but one of them might be the fact that the film was also savaged by critics and currently holds a 9% on Rotten Tomatoes. It’s also worth noting that on Rotten Tomatoes reviews tend to start off higher at first, so yeah, it doesn’t seem like “Winchester” will be digging itself out of it’s review hole.
It’s unfortunate, it seemed like all the components for a great ghost story were there, they just couldn’t pull it together. Did you see “Winchester” this weekend? What’d you think? Let us know below.
