Yahya Abdul-Mateen II is the New ‘Candyman’
I don’t envy the man the has to step into the sizeable shoes that Tony Todd wears. When you’re coming into a series that is so clearly defined by one actor, you face an incredible uphill battle. That being said, I think they’ve made a pretty unique choice for Todd’s successor.
Variety is reporting that actor Yahya Abdul-Mateen II has been cast to star in the upcoming “Candyman” film from director/writer Nia DaCosta and producer Jordan Peele.
If Abdul-Mateen’s name is unfamiliar to you you actually might have seen very recently if you were one of the millions to go see “Aquaman.” In that movie Yahya played Black Manta and did an excellent job of being charismatic and threatening. Two key components that will definitely be needed when playing Candyman.
In the original 1992 film a woman explores the origins of an urban legend named the Candyman. Unfortunately for her, she soon discovers the that the legend is more than real.
So far we don’t know much about the film except that it’ll be a spiritual successor to the original film and center on the neighborhood featured in the first film that has now become gentrified.
Stay tuned as we learn more about the “Candyman.” Wait, crap, did I just say that five times? I gotta go.
