Zach Galligan Talks ‘Gremlins 3’
As you know, we’ve been talking about a new Gremlins film for years. Whether it be a sequel, a remake or a reboot, we’ve heard it all, much like Ghostbusters 3, it’s almost became an urban legend, but like Ghostbusters 3 it actually appears as if there is some traction.
Gremlins is a film that I fell in love with ever since I graced my eyes upon it, and I’m sure many of you can relate, so of course we want the powers that be to give us something worthy of the original material. But the question is, will they?
Well, it appears as if all the key elements are coming together, Chris Columbus is involved and is said to be producing alongside Steven Spielberg and the film has a script in place courtesy of Carl Ellsworth (Goosebumps), but there is something missing, and that’s original star Zach Galligan.
Recently during a screening of Gremlins at London’s Prince Charles Cinema on Wednesday night, Galligan was involved in a Q&A, and as such divulged in the new Gremlins film, and thanks to the BBC, we have some of what Galligan said including that the film will NOT be a remake;
It’s not going to be a reboot. It will not be a remake in any way, shape, or form. Chris Columbus has come out and said that the first film is very near and dear to his heart and as long as he is alive it will never be remade.
So the only thing they will be, and apparently are going to be doing, is something along the lines of like Jurassic World, where it will be 30 years later.
As for Galligan starring in the film?
I swear on my life, I don’t know if I’m in it or not, but I think there is probably a decent chance since I’m one of the few people left standing from the first movie.
Galligan also hopes that Gremlins 3 will not rely heavily on CGI, but instead utilize it in a way much like what they did in the new Planet of the Apes films. I’m totally with him. If they want to stay true to the original films they need to use practical effects because that’s what we all want at the end of the day. Also, Galligan needs to be in the film, much like Phoebe Cates, even if it’s just a cameo of sorts.
Also, in an earlier interview with MTV, Chris Columbus also cemented the notion that Gremlins 3 will NOT be a remake of any kind;
Oh, god, a completely different direction. It’s not a remake of the first movie at all. Because the first movie’s very dear to my heart.
It’s the same universe, the same rules, same Gremlins, but not the same.
So, there you have it. What say you? Would you like more Gremlins and if so, how does this sound?
